27.6 Teeth Segmentation

The transfer to the step of the automatic segmentation of individual teeth may take a while as the program tries to identify the gingival margin automatically.

Automatic segmentation of individual teeth and gingival margin detection in Blue Sky Plan

After the automatic segmentation, you can adjust the detected gingival margin of the active/selected tooth by dragging the control points of the curve, or by manually drawing a part of the curve on the model while holding down the "Shift" key and left mouse button simultaneously.

The gingival margin can be edited for the active tooth only. The active tooth can be changed throughout the schematic jaw image in the panel, or by clicking the segmented tooth directly in the 3D view. Select the tooth you want to remove and click the Extract Tooth button. The last tooth can't be extracted. Radial deformation affects the shape of the resulting ovate pontic. When turned on, the amount of surface deformation depends solely on the distance of the surface point from a theoretical center of the tooth, resulting in a symmetric, radius-dependent shape. When toggled off, the amount of deformation applied to the gingiva at the pontic site is calculated adaptively to the shape of the tooth's boundary, resulting in an ovate pontic that copies the boundary shape.

Once the boundaries need no further refinement, you can finish the segmentation by clicking the "Continue to Model Trimming" button. This applies the changes made and separates the teeth from the 3D scan being able to move them.
